Brock McGinn provided the only goal in the shootout as the Carolina Hurricanes, who trailed twice by two goals, defeated the San Jose Sharks 4-3 on Friday night in Raleigh, N.C.

Dougie Hamilton and McGinn both scored their first goals of the season for Carolina in regulation. Teuvo Teravainen added the tying goal in the second period.

Antti Suomela, Timo Meier and Tomas Hertl scored in regulation for the Sharks, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Suomela's first career goal came in his 10th NHL game. Brent Burns had two assists.

It was the first shootout for both teams this season as they each entered the game with 5-3-1 records.

Goalie Aaron Dell made 38 saves for the Sharks.

Carolina goalie Petr Mrazek was credited with 20 stops as he was used despite the Hurricanes activating Scott Darling from injured reserve. Darling is the team's projected first-stringer, but he was injured in the final preseason game.

A high-paced game slowed some by the third period, when neither team scored.

Before Suomela's goal, at 6:37 of the first, Carolina's Jordan Martinook hit the post with a shot.

Meier's goal came less than two minutes later on a power play, with him batting in a rebound for a 2-0 lead.

San Jose held an 11-8 edge in first-period shots, but the Sharks failed to outshoot an opponent for the first time this season based on the 41-23 final tally of shots.

Hamilton's goal 72 seconds into the second period came courtesy of Burns' unintentional redirect. It was Hamilton's first goal in a Carolina uniform.

Hertl's goal on a power play put the Sharks up 3-1 at 5:47. McGinn countered less than five minutes later with an unassisted goal after a messy San Jose clearing attempt.

Teravainen's goal tied it at 3-3 with 4:46 left in the second period.

The Hurricanes held a 16-5 edge in second-period shots.

Carolina center Sebastian Aho assisted on the team's third goal, giving him at least one point in all 10 games this season.

The Hurricanes, who were opening a three-game homestand, have won two straight following a three-game skid.
