Erik Karlsson scored 39 seconds into overtime Thursday night to give the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders in Elmont, N.Y.
A turnover by the Islanders generated a two-on-one for the Sharks, who momentarily seemed stymied when Timo Meier took a pass from Karlsson and shuffled to his backhand as he skated past the net.
However, Meier whirled and passed back into the crease, where Karlsson jabbed the puck past goalie Ilya Sorokin as New York defenseman Adam Pelech got his stick down a moment too late.
Nick Bonino scored in the first period for the Sharks, who have won the first three games of a five-game road trip. Goalie Adin Hill made 24 saves.
Sharks left winger Jonah Gadjovich left with what appeared to be a lower-body injury 3:11 into the first period.
Mathew Barzal scored early in the first for the Islanders, who fell to 0-8-1 in their past nine games.
The Islanders were playing their first game since Nov. 26, as the next two scheduled games were postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak. Four players -- Josh Bailey, Andy Greene, Anders Lee and Pelech -- returned Thursday from COVID-19 protocols.
Sorokin recorded 33 saves.
The Islanders needed just one shot and 64 seconds to take their first lead at the new UBS Arena, which is now five games old. Greene and Scott Mayfield exchanged the puck behind the New York net before Greene passed to Barzal, who picked up the puck a couple steps before hitting the neutral zone. Barzal skated past Alexander Barabanov and fired a shot around Jacob Middleton that sailed off the far post and into the corner of the net.
A little more than eight minutes later. Bonino opened and closed a goal-scoring sequence that ended just after the expiration of a power play.
Bonino passed to an open Jonathan Dahlen, who dished to Timo Meier, who then threaded a pass to Dahlen between three Islanders players. With Mayfield going to his knees to try to block a shot, Dahlen passed through Mayfield's legs to Bonino, who tucked the puck into the wide-open net.
