Blackhawks 7, Red Wings 1: Brandon Saad collected two goals and an assist and captain Jonathan Toews added a tally and set up two others as visiting Chicago throttled Detroit on Hall of Famer Gordie Howe's 85th birthday.

Dave Bolland was credited with two goals - although the first was a result of Red Wings defenseman Jakub Kindl inadvertently shooting the puck into his own net in the first period. Jeremy Morin and defenseman Nick Leddy also scored for the Blackhawks, who improved to 9-0-1 in their last 10 visits to Joe Louis Arena.

Crawford turned aside 33 shots to improve to 10-2-2 in his career against the Red Wings. His bid for his eighth career shutout, however, was spoiled by Cory Emmerton with 33 seconds remaining in the third period.

After Morin opened the scoring at 2:33 of the first period, Saad doubled the advantage by shifting from backhand to forehand to beat Jimmy Howard.

Kindl's flub capped the three-goal surge in 99 seconds, but Toews converted Saad's centering feed from the slot to chase Howard (10 saves) at 3:52 of the second period. Saad rudely greeted Jonas Gustavsson by beating him between the pads just eight seconds later.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Red Wings wore No. 9 jerseys in pregame warmups to honor Howe, who was in attendance. ... Detroit captain Henrik Zetterberg sat out with a groin injury, but RW Mikael Samuelsson returned from a fractured finger to play in his first game since Feb. 17. Samuelsson, however, exited the contest with an upper-body injury. ... Red Wings D Ian White played in his 500th career game.
