NORMAN, Okla. -- Baker Mayfield strolled into Gaylord Family -- Oklahoma Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon with a t-shirt taunting Texas Tech for taunting him a year ago.

Then with plenty of help from his defense -- after a rough start on that side of the ball for the No. 10 Sooners — Mayfield helped carry his team to a 49-27 win over the Red Raiders.

About two hours before the game, Mayfield wore a black t-shirt emblazoned with "traitor" as he walked with teammates into the stadium.

During last season’s wild 66-59 Oklahoma win in Lubbock, plenty of Tech fans wore the shirts in reference to the quarterback who started his career with the Red Raiders before transferring to Oklahoma.

Afterward, Mayfield downplayed the tension between him at his former school.

"Obviously, there's a lot of history there," Mayfield said. "It feels good to get another Big 12 win and come out on top."

Mayfield walked on at Texas Tech in 2013 and became the first major college walk-on quarterback to start a season opener as a freshman.

After the regular season that year, he transferred to an Oklahoma team coming off a Sugar Bowl win and with what appeared to be a budding star at quarterback in Trevor Knight.

But after sitting out a season, Mayfield beat out Knight and has become one of the most successful quarterbacks in Sooners history and has gone 3-0 against Texas Tech.

Mayfield threw for 281 yards and four touchdowns and rushing for another score in the win.

But Mayfield didn't want to hear any praise for his performance.

"Awful," Mayfield said, assessing his performance. "Missed two wide-open throws, one of them to Rodney Anderson that probably would've scored.

"Got to be more decisive and wind up throwing it away. I didn't play my best game at all -- wasn't accurate. I’ll get that fixed."

Many from Texas Tech’s defense assessed their performance similarly after Oklahoma had 617 total yards.

"As a defense, we did not play to our level," end Kolin Hill said. “We're a lot better than what we showed out there today."

Most of Mayfield's production through the air went to freshman receiver CeeDee Lamb, who had nine catches for 147 yards and two touchdowns.

Anderson had a second consecutive big game for the Sooners (7-1, 4-1 Big 12), rushing for 181 yards and a touchdown.

"I think it was definitely one of our more complete games," Sooners coach Lincoln Riley said. “We’re trending in the right direction at the right time of year.”

While Oklahoma's offensive performance wasn't necessarily surprising, getting much help from its defense seemed nearly impossible early in the game.

The teams traded touchdowns on each of the first six offensive drives, with Texas Tech following up a slow, methodical opening touchdown drive with two rapid-fire scoring drives.

But on the Red Raiders' fourth offensive drive, Oklahoma changed up things on its defensive line, inserting a fourth defensive lineman.

"If you can't control the run game, it doesn't matter who you're playing, you're going to have issues," Sooners defensive coordinator Mike Stoops said. “We had to make an adjustment to get it under control.”

The change was immediately noticeable, and Tech's offense stalled.

"They had a good plan early against some of our three-man front to run it," Riley said. "We made some adjustments and kind of went back in and out of it and kept them off-balance a little bit more."

Texas Tech quarterback Nic Shimonek threw for 322 yards and four touchdowns and Tre King ran for 113 yards.

Cameron Batson caught two touchdown passes for Texas Tech (4-4, 1-4), which has lost four of its last five after a 3-0 start.

"Just not rising up together as a football team," Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said of his greatest frustration with the loss. "Defensive will get a stop in a big moment and offense won't convert, and then offense will score a touchdown and defense will allow one right back. We're just not rising up together and playing as a team like we need to against those quality teams. That's something we’ve got to figure out in these last four.”

NOTES: Former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops was honored at halftime as part of OU’s homecoming ceremonies. Stoops retired in June. ... On its opening touchdown, Texas Tech ran 12 times for 57 yards, throwing just three times for 18 yards. ... Sooners DT Neville Gallimore missed the game due to injury after playing sparingly a week earlier. ... Texas Tech S Jah'Shawn Johnson was ejected for targeting after a hit on Oklahoma WR CeeDee Lamb Lamb late in the third quarter. ... Oklahoma plays at Oklahoma State next Saturday. ... Texas Tech hosts Kansas State the same day.
