Junior running back Kyle Hicks rushed for 117 yards and one touchdown and also caught a scoring reception as TCU cruised to a 41-20 victory over Iowa State in the Big 12 opener for both teams at Fort Worth, Texas.
Junior quarterback Kenny Hill passed for 219 yards and one touchdown and added one on the ground for the Horned Frogs (2-1, 1-0 Big 12). Senior running back Derrick Green scored his first touchdown for TCU since transferring from Michigan.
Junior quarterback Joel Lanning rushed for two touchdowns for the Cyclones (0-3, 0-1) but completed just 12 of 21 passes for 127 yards. Standout junior receiver Allen Lazard had just one reception for eight yards while extending his school record for consecutive games catching a pass to 26.
The Horned Frogs posted five sacks with junior defensive end Mat Boesen and sophomore defensive tackle L.J. Collier each being credited with 1 1/2. Sophomore linebacker Ty Summers racked up 16 tackles.
TCU held a 17-point halftime lead and quickly began its effort to blow the game open with a nine-play, 75-yard drive to start the second half. Hill threw a 25-yard scoring pass to Hicks to make it 31-7 and junior running back Trevorris Johnson tacked on a 2-yard scoring run to make it a 28-point margin with 1:08 left in the third quarter.
The advantage reached 41-10 in the fourth quarter before Lanning scored on a 1-yard run and senior kicker Cole Netten booted a 30-yard field goal to bring the Cyclones within 21 points.
The Horned Frogs led 10-0 after the opening quarter as redshirt freshman Ryan Graf kicked a 37-yard field goal and Hicks broke loose for a 64-yard scoring run. Iowa State got on the board when Lanning scored on an 8-yard run with 12:18 left in the second quarter.
Hill capped an 11-play, 71-yard run by scoring on a 1-yard keeper to boost the TCU lead back to 10 with 7:22 left. Green added a 1-yard TD run with 48 seconds to play to account for the 24-7 halftime advantage.
