No. 11 South Carolina 33, No. 18 Michigan 28: Backup quarterback Dylan Thompson replaced an injured Connor Shaw to throw the game-winning score with 11 seconds remaining as the Gamecocks rallied past the Wolverines in the Outback Bowl.

Bruce Ellington scored the go-ahead 32-yard touchdown while Ace Sanders accounted for three scores – two receiving and one on a punt return – for South Carolina (11-2), which posted consecutive 11-win seasons for the first time in school history.

Jeremy Gallon caught nine passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns while Denard Robinson ran for 100 yards for Michigan (8-5).

After being victimized by what appeared to be a poor spot on a fourth-down conversion by the Wolverines, the Gamecocks got the play they needed when SEC Defensive Player of the Year Jadeveon Clowney knifed through the offensive line one play later and recovered a fumble after drilling Vincent Smith. On the ensuing play, Shaw connected with Sanders for a 31-yard score to give the Gamecocks a 27-22 lead.

Devin Gardner marched the Wolverines down the field, ending a 10-play drive with a 17-yard strike to Gallon with 3:29 remaining. But Thompson – who replaced Shaw with less than a minute remaining – hit Ellington down the middle of the field in the waning seconds and the receiver strolled into the end zone.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The fourth-down conversion in question came as a result of Michigan’s Floyd Simmons gaining four yards on a fake punt from the Wolverines’ 37. Michigan appeared to fall short, but referee Jeff McConaughey ruled the Wolverines gained the necessary yardage. … This game marked the first time all season that Michigan allowed a 200-yard passer as Shaw threw for 224 yards. … The Gamecocks improved to 3-1 in the Outback Bowl and 6-12 all-time in bowl games.
