Cody Journell made a 22-yard field goal in overtime while the Scarlet
Knights' Nick Borgese missed his 42-yard attempt, giving the Hokies a
come-from-behind victory in the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando,
Fla.
Virginia Tech (7-6) struggled
throughout the game offensively, falling behind 10-0 early, before
rallying with 10 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime. After Borgese missed a 47-yard field goal attempt on the
second play of the fourth quarter, Virginia Tech drove 62 yards in six plays to set up
Journell's 25-yarder that got the Hokies on the board.
Antone Exum intercepted Rutgers
quarterback Gary Nova on the third play of Rutgers' next drive,
returning it to the Scarlet Knights' 21-yard line. Three plays later,
Logan Thomas completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Corey Fuller to
tie the game with 10:56 to play.
Each team had the ball five times
the rest of regulation, but neither could put together any kind of scoring threat.
Rutgers (9-4) jumped out early
when Khaseem Greene recovered a fumble in the end zone on the
second play from scrimmage to give the Knights a 7-0
advantage. Borgese hit a 36-yarder with 2:38 left in the first quarter to
make it 10-0.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The two teams
combined to convert 8 of 40 third-down opportunities (Rutgers 3-of-21, Virginia Tech 5-of-19). ... Thomas came into the game as the
Hokies' leading rusher, but was credited with minus-10 yards on eight carries. … Rutgers had its five-game bowl
winning streak snapped. The Scarlet Knights had been tied with
Mississippi State for the nation's longest current streak.
