No. 7 Georgia 45, No. 16 Nebraska 31: Aaron Murray threw for 427 yards and five touchdowns and the Bulldogs all but assured themselves a top-5 finish in the national rankings with a Capital One Bowl win.
Georgia (12-2) scored the final 22 points to notch its third 12-win season in program history.
Nebraska (10-4) lost its third straight bowl game and second straight Capital One Bowl. The Cornhuskers entered with the nation’s top-ranked pass defense (148.2 yards per game), but Murray shredded them after two early interceptions.
It was 31-31 starting the fourth quarter when Murray rolled right and threw to running back Keith Marshall’s back shoulder. The freshman made a great adjustment to catch the ball, then tiptoed the sideline for a 24-yard score. Chris Conley’s 87-yard touchdown catch, on a slip-screen against a Nebraska blitz, extended the lead to 45-31 with 11:03 left.
Damian Swann intercepted Nebraska’s Taylor Martinez twice, and the Cornhuskers also lost a fumble. Nebraska linebacker Will Compton returned an interception for a touchdown while running back Rex Burkhead ran for a score and caught a touchdown pass.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Murray’s 75-yard TD pass to Tavarres King in the second quarter was Georgia’s longest pass play this season, until the 87-yarder to Conley. … Georgia WR and KR Malcolm Mitchell left with a concussion in the first quarter and did not return. … Murray’s five TD passes were the most by a Georgia player in a bowl game.
