Ball State 34, No. 25 Toledo 27: Jahwan Edwards ran 15 yards for the go-ahead score with 1:43 remaining as the visiting Cardinals snapped the Rockets’ eight-game winning streak.
Keith Wenning passed for 280 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Jamill Smith, and drove the Cardinals 86 yards in 11 plays for the winning score. Edwards finished with 16 carries for 105 yards as Ball State (7-3, 4-2 MAC) won its fourth straight.
David Fluellen registered 200 yards rushing for Toledo (8-2, 5-1), including a 16-yard touchdown run that put the Rockets up 27-24 on the first play of the fourth quarter. Toledo, which lost for the first time in four games to Ball State, could not gain a first down on its final drive.
Ball State raced to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter as Wenning completed 12 of his first 13 passes, including touchdown passes to Smith and Connor Ryan. Wenning had three interceptions, two in the first half.
Terrance Owens, who passed for 215 yards, connected with Bernard Reedy for a 24-yard scoring strike with 1:30 left in the first quarter to cut the lead in half for Toledo. Cassius McDowell’s 4-yard run tied the game 17-17 with 54 seconds left in the first half.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Toledo came into the game in the BCS rankings for the first time, sitting at No. 25. … It was Wenning’s 32nd straight start. … Reedy had seven catches for 98 yards. …Wenning, who had 29 completions Tuesday, tied Nate Davis for the school record with 678.
