Wake Forest 20, Liberty 17: Freshman Deandre Martin scored the
go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter as the Demon Deacons overcame a
sluggish start to hold off the upset-minded Flames.
Martin
rushed for 74 yards for Wake Forest (1-0), which came from behind on two
different occasions to improve to 13-6 against Big South opponents.
Wake
Forest’s leading returning receiver, Michael Campanaro, added nine receptions
for 96 yards.
Liberty
(0-1), playing its first game under new coach Turner Gill, got on the board in
the first quarter on an Elliott Dutra 37-yard touchdown reception, but Campanaro answered with
a 31-yard touchdown reception of his own late in the second to knot the game at
7-7 going into the break.
Sirchauncey
Holloway put the Flames back in the lead with an early third-quarter TD
reception from Brian Hudson only to see the Liberty lead evaporate later in the
quarter on an interception return for a touchdown by Demon Deacons safety A.J.
Marshall.
Martin
then added the game’s only rushing touchdown as Wake Forest’s defense forced a
punt and turnover on downs on Liberty’s final two possessions to hold on for
the victory.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Wake Forest QB Tanner Price was intercepted on the first drive
of the second quarter, the first time he had been picked off in six games
dating back to last season. He did not throw an interception over his
final 173 pass attempts of the 2011 season. … Demon Deacons Junior RB Josh Harris
(concussion) left the game in the first half and did not return. … The only
other time the Demon Deacons faced the Flames was 2006, the same year they went
on to win the ACC championship game.
