Quarterback Riley Nelson connected with Cody Hoffman for three
touchdowns, including a 2-yard strike with 11 seconds remaining, as
Brigham Young defeated Tulsa 24-21 at the Armed Forces Bowl on Friday in
Dallas.
BYU (10-3) drove 48 yards for the final score, including a key 14-yard
run by Nelson on fourth and nine. Nelson finished with 250 yards passing
and Hoffman had eight receptions for 122 yards.
The Cougars have won five of their last six bowls and finished with nine victories in their last 10 games.
Tulsa quarterback G.J. Kinne threw for three touchdowns, including a
30-yard scoring strike to Bryan Burnham with 10:42 remaining to give the
Golden Hurricane a 21-17 lead.
Tulsa (8-5) built a 14-3 lead in the first half as Kinne connected with
Ricky Johnson and Clay Sears for touchdown passes. The Golden Hurricane
punted after three plays on their other five possessions.
BYU struggled to get much going in the first half, but got a big break
when Tulsa’s J.D. Ratcliff fumbled a punt with 17 seconds left in the
second quarter. Nelson scrambled and found Hoffman for a 17-yard
touchdown pass on the next play as the Cougars closed to within 14-10 at
halftime.
Junior Dexter McCoil had two interceptions for Tulsa and had another nullified by an offside penalty.
