Redshirt freshman Connor Halliday came off the bench to throw for 494 yards and four touchdowns as Washington State beat visiting Arizona State 37-27 on Saturday.

Halliday replaced Marshall Lobbestael in the first quarter and was 27-of-36 passing with no interceptions for Washington State (4-6, 2-5 Pac-12 North), which had lost five straight games and nine consecutive to the Sun Devils.

After Washington State stopped the Sun Devils on a fourth-and-1 in the red zone early in the fourth quarter, Halliday capped an 89-yard touchdown drive with his 17-yard pass to Isiah Barton to make it 30-27.

Arizona State kicker Alex Garoutte missed a 22-yard field goal with 5:54 left that would have tied the game, and the Cougars clinched the win with two minutes left on Carl Winston’s 1-yard touchdown run.

Halliday replaced Drew Bledsoe in the school’s record books for most passing yards by a freshman.

Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler was 28-of-44 passing for 351 yards, but the Sun Devils managed only 60 yards on the ground.

The Sun Devils (6-4, 4-3 Pac-12 South) missed a chance to take sole possession of first place in the Pac-12 South after UCLA's 31-6 loss at Utah earlier Saturday.
