Freshman Joe Bergeron ran for three touchdowns and No. 25 Texas cruised a seventh straight home win over rival Texas Tech, 52-20 on Saturday.
Foswhitt Whittaker had two touchdown runs for the Longhorns (6-2, 3-2 Big 12), who have won two straight at home after enduring a five-game skid at Darrell K. Royal Stadium.
The win assures Texas will return to the postseason after failing to become bowl eligible for the first time since 1997 last season. That was the same year the Red Raiders (5-4, 2-4 Big 12) last won in Austin, and the Longhorns made sure it stayed that way thanks to a potent rushing attack and a stifling defense.
Even without star freshman Malcolm Brown (turf toe), Texas gashed the nation’s 114th-ranked rushing defense for 441 rushing yards - the same amount it ran for in a 43-0 win over Kansas last week.
It was another horrendous showing for the Red Raiders, who followed up a huge road win over then-No.1 Oklahoma with a 41-7 home loss to Iowa State last week. Texas Tech was gouged for 368 rushing yards against the Cyclones and the Red Raiders were powerless to stop Texas.
The Longhorns ran 235 yards while scoring 28 unanswered points in the second quarter en route to a 31-6 halftime lead.
