San San Te kicked the game-winning 37-yard field goal in the first overtime as Rutgers came from two scores down midway through the fourth quarter to take down visiting South Florida 20-17 on Saturday.
Chas Dodd, who replaced Gary Nova under center during the contest, passed for 125 yards and a touchdown for the Scarlet Knights (6-3, 3-2 Big East), who became bowl eligible.
The Bulls (4-4, 0-4) had the ball first in overtime but B.J. Daniels was intercepted on third down by Duron Harmon. Three short running plays and Rutgers turned it over to Te, who buried his second field goal of the contest.
South Florida had a chance to win at the end of regulation, but Maikon Bonani missed a 27-yard field goal as time expired.
The Scarlet Knights were down 17-3 and could get nothing going offensively into the fourth quarter. Their fortunes began to change when Jeremy Deering broke a return for a 98-yard touchdown, cutting it to 17-10 with 7:25 remaining.
Rutgers finished with minus-7 yards rushing so they went to the air of their final scoring drive in regulation and tied it on a 34-yard pass to Brandon Coleman with 1:08 left.
South Florida, which at one time was ranked in the top 15, has dropped four straight.
