Zach Guyer’s 42-yard field goal with 4:30 left sent Iowa State to a narrow 13-10 victory over Kansas Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium.
Iowa State (5-4, 2-4 Big 12), which is one win shy of becoming bowl eligible after a 3-4 start, came out flat against the Jayhawks (2-7, 0-6 Big 12), who entered riding a six-game losing streak.
The Cyclones turned the ball over three times — twice in the second half — but put together a late drive when they needed it, marching 63 yards on 12 plays to set up the game-winning kick.
Jared Barnett, making his second start at quarterback, finished 16-of-30 for 175 passing yards for the Cyclones, who defeated the Jayhawks in consecutive years for the first time since 2001-02. Barnett also added 125 yards on the ground.
Kansas, which hasn’t won since defeating Northern Illinois 45-42 on Sept. 10, hung around despite running just 25 plays for 68 yards of total offense after halftime.
D.J. Beshears’ 22-yard first-quarter touchdown run put the Jayhawks up early, but Iowa State responded with Aaron Horne’s 18-yard score late in the second quarter to take a 10-7 lead into halftime.
The Cyclones racked up 426 yards of total offense and had plenty of scoring opportunities but couldn’t get out of their own way. A missed field goal ruined one first-half drive, and another possession in the second half — a 17-play, 70-yard drive — stalled out at the Kansas 10-yard line after a fumble.
Kansas’ much-maligned defense gave up less than 500 yards for just the second time in seven games.
