Host Miami capitalized on Georgia Tech’s special teams blunders and beat the No. 19 Yellow Jackets for the third straight time, 24-7.
Miami (4-3, 2-2 ACC) recovered a fumbled punt for a touchdown to grab a 14-0 second-quarter lead. Georgia Tech (6-2, 3-2 ACC) also failed on a fake punt in its own territory and had a 13-yard punt and 8-yard kickoff return.
The Hurricanes took advantage of mistakes right from the start. JoJo Nicolas intercepted Tevin Washington’s overthrow on Tech’s first offensive play, setting up Mike James 2-yard touchdown run.
When returner Zach Laskey tried to pick up a bouncing punt inside his 10, he muffed it. Nicolas recovered in the end zone for a 14-0 lead. The Jackets answered with a 20-play, 92-yard touchdown drive.
But they left a minute on the first-half clock. After Travis Benjamin’s long kickoff return, Lamar Miller scored on a 14-yard run to restore the two-touchdown lead.
The Jackets came in ranked second nationally in rushing, averaging 348 yards. They mustered 124.
In the last three meetings, Miami has outscored Georgia Tech 92-34.
