Quarterback Andrew Luck added a one-handed catch to his potential Heisman Trophy highlight reel as No. 4 Stanford extended the nation’s longest active winning streak to 12 games with a 45-19 victory over visiting UCLA on Saturday.
Luck made an acrobatic grab of a halfback pass from Drew Terrell while heading out of bounds for 13 yards to set up Stanford’s first touchdown. Luck completed 23-of-27 passes for 227 yards with three touchdowns.
The Cardinal (4-0, 2-0 Pac-12) jumped to a 17-0 lead in the first half on a touchdown pass from Luck to Coby Fleener and 2-yard scoring run by Stepfan Taylor.
After a 23-yard field goal by Stanford’s Jordan Williamson, UCLA (2-3, 1-1) got on the board on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Richard Brehaut to Joseph Fauria.
Stanford made it 24-7 on the second play of the third quarter when Luck hooked up with Fleener again, this time for 51 yards.
UCLA responded on its next possession on Fauria’s second touchdown reception of the game, a 13-yarder from Brehaut.
But just when it appeared the Bruins could get back in the game, Taylor Embree fumbled a Stanford punt and the Cardinal scored on a 16-yard run by Tyler Gaffney four plays later to extend the lead to 31-13.
Taylor had 112 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.
