Behind an unstoppable rushing attack, Georgia Tech broke open a close game after halftime en route to a 66-24 dismantling of Kansas on Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
Georgia Tech racked up a school-record 604 rushing yards and had seven rushing touchdowns, including two in the third quarter as the Yellow Jackets increased their seven-point halftime lead to 52-17 with 3:30 left in the third.
The Yellow Jackets finished with 768 total yards, also a school record, and scored on 10 of their first 11 possessions — nine touchdowns and a field goal. They punted on their second possession but never again, moving up and down the field against a Kansas defense that allowed 66 points in its first two games against McNeese State and Northern Illinois.
Orwin Smith had 157 rushing yards and a touchdown and Embry Peeples added 110 yards and a score for Georgia Tech, which improved to 3-0 for the first time in head coach Paul Johnson’s four-year tenure. David Sims had a team-high two rushing touchdowns and added 70 yards on nine carries.
Believe it or not, this was a close game through the first two quarters, as Georgia Tech didn’t take its first two-possession lead until there were 39 seconds left in the second quarter. Even then, the Jayhawks marched down the field for a field goal as the half expired to shrink the deficit to 24-17.
But that’s when the Jayhawks came unglued, allowing 42 unanswered points before backup Quinn Mecham found Andrew Turzilli for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 2:24 left.
Tevin Washington, who had four touchdowns in last week’s 49-21 win over Middle Tennessee State, finished 4-of-7 for 164 yards and a pair of touchdown passes for the Yellow Jackets, who improved to 10-5 all-time against current Big 12 teams.
Darrian Miller had 53 yards and a pair of scores for Kansas, which lost for the 10th straight time on the road and fell to 5-17 all-time against the ACC.
