Penn State gambled late then scored the go-ahead touchdown with 2:42 left to beat Temple 14-10 Saturday in Philadelphia.
Running back Brandon Beachum’s second effort on fourth-and-1 from the Temple 3-yard line set up Michael Zordich’s 1-yard plunge on the next play. It gave Penn State (2-1) its 29th straight win over in-state rival Temple (2-1), which failed to capitalize on a halftime lead for the second straight matchup.
The Nittany Lions overcame another miserable passing day, as tandem quarterbacks Rob Bolden and Matt McGloin failed to throw a touchdown for the third straight game. Neither signal-caller has emerged as the clear-cut starter with just one game to go before Penn State opens up Big Ten play.
Bolden was under center for the go-ahead drive Saturday, but the ground game paved the way in a series set up by a Michael Mauti interception in Owls’ territory.
Temple held control of the game up until that point, taking an early 7-0 lead after a Bernard Pierce 2-yard touchdown on the game’s first drive. Silas Reed’s 17-yard touchdown dash tied the game in the second quarter but three missed Penn State field goals kept Temple in charge. The Owls, though, failed to score in the second half, feeding Pierce just four times and committing two costly turnovers in the fourth quarter.
