Chris Rainey ran for 119 yards and a touchdown as No. 18 Florida rolled to a 39-0 victory over visiting Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday.
Trey Burton, Hunter Joyer and Mike Gillislee each had touchdown runs for the Gators (2-0), who continue to make drastic strides under new offensive coordinator Charlie Weis.
Florida has scored 80 points over its first two games, but those numbers have come against inferior competition.
The Gators’ biggest test under first-year coach Will Muschamp will come when they host Tennessee in their Southeastern Conference opener next week.
Alabama-Birmingham (0-1), which was one of two FBS teams that didn’t play last week, fell to 2-16 against the SEC.
Rainey has been the sparkplug for Florida’s revamped, pro-style offense. The 5-foot-9, 175-pound senior has four touchdowns in two games after becoming the first player in school history - and the third since 1996 - to score three different ways in the opener.
The Gators struggled in the red zone early and Caleb Sturgis kicked three field goals, which contributed to a 16-0 lead. Florida pulled away late in the first half following a safety and a 5-yard run from Burton off an option read on the ensuing possession.
