Brandon Weeden completed 42-of-53 passes for 397 yards and two touchdowns and Joseph Randle added 121 rushing yards and a pair of scores as No. 7 Oklahoma State defeated Arizona 37-14 Thursday night at Boone Pickens Stadium.
Oklahoma State (2-0) scored 61 points and racked up 666 total yards in its season-opening win against Louisiana last week. This time, playing against an Arizona defense that ranked third in the Pac-12 in 2010, the Cowboys continued to put up big offensive numbers.
The Cowboys, who finished with 594 total yards, scored three first-half touchdowns and took a 21-0 lead into the half. Weeden completed his first 13 passes for 104 yards and a touchdown.
Weeden, a senior quarterback, found 11 different receivers, including Justin Blackmon, a Heisman trophy candidate who finished with 12 catches for 128 yards and two touchdowns.
Randle also caught nine passes for 99 yards, including a 63-yard reception early in the fourth quarter that set up Oklahoma State’s fifth score, a Jeremy Smith 6-yard TD run that extended the Cowboys’ lead to 34-7 with 12:32 left.
Arizona (1-1), which lost to the Cowboys for the second time in its last three meetings, pulled within 21-7 with 7:38 left in the third quarter on Keola Antolin’s 1-yard touchdown run. But the Cowboys, who have won 12 of their last 15 home games, responded late in the third quarter when Weeden found Blackmon on an 8-yard touchdown pass.
Arizona’s Nick Foles finished 36-of-50 for 388 yards and a touchdown a week after throwing for a career-high five touchdown passes in a 41-10 win over Northern Arizona.
