Redshirt freshman Kevin Parks ran for 108 yards and three touchdowns and Virginia's defense put on a smothering performance, as the Cavaliers thumped in-state rival William & Mary, 40-3, on Saturday at Scott Stadium.
The Tribe (0-1) knocked off Virginia, 26-14, in their 2009 season opener, but the Cavaliers were dominant this time around. The Cavaliers (1-0) amassed 483 total yards while holding the Tribe to 169 yards and forcing two turnovers.
Virginia was within 4:34 of its first shutout since they blanked Maryland, 31-0, on Oct. 4, 2008, until Drake Kuhn's 35-yard field goal got the Tribe on the board
Running behind an offensive line that returned four starters, Parks averaged 7.2 yards per carry and reeled off touchdown runs of 19, 1 and 25 yards.
Virginia coach Mike London didn't name a starting quarterback until Monday, but sophomore Michael Rocco started and played most of the game. He completed his first 11 passes and finished 21 of 29 for 168 yards.
William & Mary running back Jonathan Grimes, who entered needing only 635 yards to match the school record for career rushing yards, gained only 13 yards on seven carries. Quarterback Michael Paulus also struggled, going 6 for 25 for 53 yards.
Virginia leads the all-time series 27-6-1.
