South Carolina still has a big game to play but it wasn’t looking past Clemson.
Stephen Garcia threw a pair of touchdown passes and Spencer Lanning kicked three field goals to lead the 18th-ranked Gamecocks to a 29-7 victory over the Tigers in their annual battle for supremacy in the Palmetto State.
South Carolina (9-3, 5-3 SEC) already had a date set with Auburn in the Southeastern Conference championship game next Saturday in Atlanta but took care of business against its rival first.
Garcia threw a touchdown in each of the first two quarters and the Gamecocks have now defeated the Tigers in consecutive seasons for the first time since winning three straight in the series from 1968-70.
Lanning made field goals of 46, 25 and 37 yards for South Carolina, which has won three straight.
South Carolina did not get a big game from Marcus Lattimore but it didn’t need it. A freshman, Lattimore entered Saturday having rushed for 1,066 yards and 17 touchdowns but was limited to 50 yards on 23 carries.
Garcia, Lanning and the Gamecocks defense picked up the slack. South Carolina limited Clemson to 260 yards and forced two turnovers. The defense even put points on the board as Antonio Allen intercepted Clemson quarterback Kyle Parker and returned it 36 yards for a score to make it 26-7 in the third quarter.
