DeLeon Eskridge rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown as Minnesota sent its seniors out in style with a 27-24 victory over No. 24 Iowa on Saturday.
MarQueis Gray added a rushing score and Duane Bennett’s 8-yard rushing touchdown prove to be the deciding score for the Golden Gophers, who finished the season with consecutive victories after dropping nine straight.
Minnesota (3-9, 2-6 Big Ten) entered the game with just one conference win but got off to a great start against Iowa (7-5, 4-4), building up a 10-0 lead after the first quarter on a 26-yard field goal and Gray’s 14-yard touchdown.
The Hawkeyes cut it to 10-7 on Ricky Stanzi’s touchdown pass to Derrell Johnson-Koulianos. The Gophers responded on their next possession, getting an 11-yard touchdown from Eskridge before Johnson-Koulianos took the ensuing kickoff back 88 yards for a score. Minnesota still managed to take a 20-17 edge into the half.
Stanzi’s touchdown pass early in the fourth gave Iowa its first lead but the Gophers did not quit, getting Bennett’s score to jump back on top, 27-24, with 4:39 left.
