Ryan Clarke and Noel Devine had short touchdown runs, leading West Virginia to a 17-10 win over Louisville in a Big East game on Saturday.
The visiting Mountaineers (7-3, 3-2 Big East) took the lead for good on Clarke's 2-yard run midway through the second quarter.
Louisville (5-6, 2-4 Big East) must win its last game of the season against Rutgers next Friday to become bowl eligible.
West Virgina's defense was the story of the game. Louisville's only touchdown came when Daniel Brown recovered a fumble by quarterback Geno Smith in the end zone.
The Cardinals' had one last chance to tie the game after blocking a field goal with 2:24, but Keith Tandy intercepted Justin Burke's pass to seal the win.
Chris Philpott kicked a 43-yard field goal to give Louisville an early 3-0 lead, but the Mountaineers went ahead on Devine's 2-yard scoring run.
The Cardinals took a 10-7 lead early in the second quarter on Brown's fumble recovery, but West Virginia regained the lead on Clarke's 2-yard score and took a 14-10 lead into halftime.
Tyler Bitancurt's 43-yard field goal early in the third quarter extended the lead to 17-10.
Smith completed 8 of 19 passes for for 133 yards. Burke completed 12 of 24 passes for 145 yards.
