South Carolina had never won a game in Gainesville against Florida, partly because Steve Spurrier was coaching the Gators for many years.

With Spurrier on their sidelines, the Gamecocks finally pulled off the feat with a thorough victory over the Gators, 36-14, to capture their first SEC championship. South Carolina will meet Auburn in the title game in Atlanta on Dec. 4.

It was dominating performance by the Gamecocks, who trailed 7-0 after Florida’s Andre Debose returned the opening kickoff 99 yards. But South Carolina blew the game open with 29 straight points, led by Marcus Lattimore. The freshman finished with 217 yards and three touchdowns on 44 carries as the Gamecocks controlled the line of scrimmage.

The Gamecocks went up 29-7 on a 7-yard run by Stephen Garcia early in the fourth quarter. South Carolina shut down the Florida offense, which didn’t convert a third down until the fourth quarter and finished 2 of 14. Florida could muster no offense until the game was out of reach and Chris Rainey scored on a 26-yard pass from Jordan Reed midway through the fourth quarter. South Carolina sacked Florida quarterbacks three times and forced two turnovers.

South Carolina entered the game 0-12 in Gainesville, including a 56-6 loss two years ago. In his first season at South Carolina in 2005, Spurrier beat Florida, the Gamecocks’ only victory in the last 19 meetings. Spurrier won seven SEC East titles during his coaching career at Florida.
