Freshman quarterback Tyler Bray made his first start a memorable one as he threw for 325 yards and five touchdowns to lead Tennessee to a 50-14 victory over host Memphis at the Liberty Bowl on Saturday night.
Bray's touchdowns all came in the first half as the Volunteers (3-6) raced to a 40-7 lead.
Tennessee scored on seven consecutive drives, highlighted by Bray touchdown passes to five different receivers - Tauren Poole (9 yards), Justin Hunter (42), Denarius Moore (14), Da'Rick Rogers (22) and Gerald Jones (9).
Bray, who played well after replacing Matt Simms last week, likely earned the starting job for the rest of the season. Simms, who was questionable with a neck injury, saw limited action and completed 3-of-5 passes.
The Volunteers, who broke a four-game losing streak, amassed 508 total yards of offense and converted on 10-of-15 third downs. Poole led Tennessee with 101 yards rushing and a touchdown run, and Moore had 101 receiving yards. Tennessee also scored 50 points against Tennessee-Martin.
Ryan Williams was 18 of 27 for 221 yards for the Tigers (1-8), who have lost six straight.
