Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville went with backup quarterback Steven Sheffield to jump start the Red Raiders' season, but it was former starter Taylor Potts who energized the offense en route to a 24-17 win over No. 14 Missouri (7-2, 3-2 Big 12).
Potts entered the game midway through the second quarter with Texas Tech (5-4, 3-4 Big 12) trailing 17-3 and promptly led the Red Raiders on an 82-yard touchdown drive before halftime. Potts finished 19 of 28 for 188 yards and three touchdowns.
Texas Tech got a strong performance from senior running back Baron Batch, who carried the ball 28 times for 134 yards. The Red Raiders had been averaging just 116 yards rushing per game.
Missouri got off to a fast start backed by a dominant rushing attack in the first half. The Tigers scored on a 69-yard run by Marcus Murphy and then a 71-yard run by Kendial Lawrence as they jumped out to a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Missouri rushed for 243 yards in the first half, 7 more than their previous season high.
What was more surprising was the way Texas Tech shut down Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert after giving up an average of 317 yards per game. Gabbert finished 12 of 30 for 95 yards.
