Nathan Scheelhaase threw a pair of touchdowns in the first half and Illinois forced five turnovers in 43-13 homecoming victory over Indiana on Saturday.
Patrick Nixon-Youman and Jonathan Brown each returned an interception for a touchdown as Illinois (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) rebounded from a 26-6 loss to Michigan State by dominating the Hoosiers.
The Fighting Illini intercepted Ben Chappell four times, limiting the nation’s fourth-ranked passer to just 26 of 49 for 282 yards and a touchdown. Chappell had only thrown three interceptions all year entering Saturday’s contest.
Illinois outscored Indiana 17-3 in the second quarter and never looked back.
Scheelhaase’s second touchdown pass of the first half gave Illinois a 17-7 lead with 10:00 left, and Nixon-Youman then extended the advantage to 24-7 less than three minutes later when he intercepted Chappell and returned it 68 yards.
The Fighting Illini, who have played the second toughest schedule in the country, are now just two wins away from securing a bowl bid.
Ted Bolser had a touchdown catch for Indiana (4-3, 0-3), which was just 3-of-11 on third down.
