East Carolina quarterback Dominique Davis scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in overtime and the Pirates intercepted a pass on the game's final play to close out a 33-27 victory over visiting N.C. State on Saturday.
The Wolfpack (6-2) fought back from a 21-point first-quarter deficit to take the lead late in the fourth quarter at 27-24 on a Josh Czajkowski 37-yard field goal with 3:03 remaining in regulation. The Pirates (4-2) countered with a 32-yard field goal by Michael Barbour to tie it up at 27-27 with 1:09 left and force overtime.
The Pirates appeared to have the game in hand after a big first quarter. East Carolina's Jonathan Williams scored on a 5-yard run and Davis threw a pair of touchdown passes - an 11-yarder to Lance Lewis and a 3-yarder to Justin Jones - to give the Pirates an early 21-0 advantage.
But the Wolfpack battled back with three touchdowns of their own in the second period. Quarterback Russell Wilson threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Graham and ran one in from one yard out, and Dean Hayes added a 1-yard touchdown plunge.
Barbour drilled a 35-yard field goal to put the Pirates on top 24-21 at halftime, but N.C. State tied it up in the fourth quarter on a 22-yard field goal by Czajkowski.
Davis went 37-for-53 for 376 yards and two passing touchdowns to go with his game-winning touchdown run.
