Ricky Stanzi threw for one touchdown and ran for another to lead No. 18 Iowa to a 24-3 victory over No. 20 Penn State on Saturday.
The Hawkeyes (4-1, 1-0 Big Ten) built a 17-0 lead in the first half, and never allowed the Nittany Lions (3-2, 0-1) to get their offense going. They held Penn State to 69 net rushing yards.
Stanzi completed 16-of-22 passes for 227 yards. Shaun Prater intercepted a pass from Penn State quarterback Rob Bolden, and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
Bolden completed 20-of-38 passes for 212 yards..
Michael Meyer's 20-yard field goal gave Iowa the lead with 9:50 left in the first quarter. Stanzi hit Derrell Johnson-Koulianos for a 9-yard score with 1:20 left in the period.
Stanzi's 1-yard run with 1:52 left in the second quarter pushed Iowa's lead to 17-0.
Penn State drove to the Iowa 2-yard line in the final seconds of the first half, but poor clock management cost them a chance for a touchdown.
Quarterback Robert Bolden hit Brett Brackett down the sideline for a 49-yard gain. The Nittany Lions lined up to go for a touchdown on the final play of the half, but were called for delay of game, and had to settle for Collin Wagner's 25-yard field goal.
