Trevor Vittatoe threw three touchdown passes to lead Texas El Paso to a 38-20 victory over New Mexico on Saturday night.
Vittatoe, who was 20 of 37 for 264 yards, hit Kris Adams on scoring passes of 44 and 48 yards, and also threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Evan Davis.
The Miners (4-1) broke away from a 14-14 tie in the first quarter with 24 consecutive points.
The Lobos (0-5) scored twice on special teams, including a 101-yard kickoff return by Myles Daughtry in the fourth quarter.
New Mexico took a 7-0 lead on quarterback Tarean Austin's 4-yard run early in the first quarter before UTEP scored two touchdowns in less than a minute to go ahead. Vittatoe hit Adams on a 44-yard scoring pass. Greg Watkins intercepted a pass and returned it to the New Mexico 10-yard line, and Joe Banyard scored from there to give UTEP a 14-7 lead.
The Lobos tied the game with 3:12 left in the first quarter when they blocked Dakota Warren's 52-yard field goal try, and Anthony Hooks picked up the ball and ran 45 yards for a touchdown.
Warren kicked a 44-yard field goal to put UTEP back in front early in the second quarter, and Vittatoe hit Davis with a 12-yard scoring pass with 1:15 left in the half.
Vittatoe found Adams for a 48-yard scoring play with 41 seconds left in the third quarter, and Leilyon Myers scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter.
