Quarterback T.J. Yates passed for two touchdowns and tailback Shaun Draughn ran for three second-half scores as suddenly resurgent North Carolina stormed past visiting East Carolina 42-17 in Saturday’s non-conference matchup at Kenan Stadium.
Yates completed 18 of 26 passes for 181 yards as the depth-starved Tar Heels ran off 28 consecutive second-half points to win for the second consecutive week and even their record at 2-2.
UNC, which was again without a number of key players due to ongoing NCAA and school academic investigations, trailed 17-14 following a Michael Barbour 28-yard field goal with 11 minutes left in the third period.
Draughn, who finished the day with 137 yards on 27 carries, later added scoring runs of one, four and 13 yards as North Carolina pulled away. Backfield mate Johnny White added 140 more yards on 16 carries for the ‘Heels.
East Carolina quarterback Dominique Davis completed 32 of 50 passes for 229 yards and a touchdown, but also threw three interceptions.
