UCLA’s goal-line stand in the fourth quarter preserved a tie and Richard Brehaut capped an ensuing 99-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to lift the Bruins to a 42-28 win over Washington State at the Rose Bowl on Saturday.
The Bruins, who blew a 13-point lead, stopped the Cougars on four straight rushing attempts from the 1-yard line early in the fourth quarter and then marched the length of the field for the go-ahead score.
UCLA rushed for 433 yards in the game. Johnathan Franklin had 211 yards and one score and Derrick Coleman rushed for 185 yards and three touchdowns.
UCLA (3-2, 1-1 Pac-10) built a 20-7 lead with just over a minute to play in the second quarter, but Washington State scored 21 straight points to take a 28-20 lead midway through the third quarter.
James Montgomery scored a pair of touchdowns for Washington State (1-4, 0-2). Jeff Tuel threw for 311 yards on 20-for-37 passing.
Brehaut started at quarterback for UCLA as Kevin Prince sat out the contest with a knee injury.
