Cameron Newton ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more, leading No. 14 Auburn back from another halftime deficit for a 35-27 victory against No. 15 South Carolina on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Newton rushed for 172 yards on 25 carries, scoring on a 54-yard run in the first quarter and adding a 3-yard score in the second and a 4-yard touchdown run in the third. He added a pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, giving the Tigers the lead with a 7-yard strike to Philip Lutzenkirchen and padding the advantage with a 13-yard toss to Emory Blake.
The Tigers held freshman running back Marcus Lattimore to 36 yards on 14 carries, but the Gamecocks went to the air to build a 20-14 halftime lead and a 27-21 advantage through three quarters.
South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia completed 15 of 21 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns, but he lost fumbles on consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter and was replaced by freshman Connor Shaw.
Shaw twice drove the Gamecocks inside the Auburn 25-yard line, but both drives ended in interceptions.
Freshman Michael Dyer added 101 yards on 24 carries for Auburn, which rallied from a 17-3 halftime deficit last week against Clemson.
Alshon Jeffery caught eight passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns for South Carolina, which hasn't beaten Auburn since 1933.
