The Texas Longhorns rode a rugged defensive performance and shut down the potent Texas Tech offense en route to a 24-14 win Saturday in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

Texas' defense held the Red Raiders to just 142 total yards and one touchdown in the win that improved the Horns’ record to 3-0. Tech drops to 2-1.

The Red Raider defense performed well, intercepting Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert three times, recording three sacks and limiting the Longhorns to just 90 yards rushing. Texas finished with 319 total yards, 227 yards coming through the air.

The Horns piled up 80 of those yards on an epic 23-play, 80-yard drive capped by a Barrett Matthews touchdown reception that made the score 24-14 with 9:26 left to play in the game. Gilbert finished 21-37, 227 yards with with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Texas Tech QB Taylor Potts finished 21-35, 158 yards, with a touchdown and two interceptions.
