Freshman running back Marcus Lattimore ran for 96 yards and a touchdown, Stephen Garcia threw a pair of touchdown passes, and South Carolina held off Furman 38-19 on Saturday in Columbia, S.C.
Lattimore scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter, giving him five touchdowns in his first three collegiate games.
Garcia threw for 152 yards and two touchdowns on 13-of-21 passing, but he also threw a pair of interceptions, one of which Shawn Boone returned 3 yards for a touchdown.
Furman's Adam Mims caught 10 passes for 202 yards, including a 72-yard touchdown. Alshon Jeffery caught five passes for 99 yards for South Carolina (3-0).
The Paladins (1-1) had a chance to make it a one-score game in the fourth quarter, but Stephon Gilmore sealed the victory with an 80-yard interception return for a touchdown with 6:57 left.
Freshman quarterback Connor Shaw led a scoring drive just before halftime to give the Gamecocks a 21-6 lead. Shaw was 4-for-4 for 42 yards and rushed for 22 yards on four carries.
It was the first meeting between the in-state rivals since 1982, when Furman shocked the Gamecocks at home.
