Stampeders 41, Argonauts 7: Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 324 yards and three touchdowns as visiting Calgary exacted a bit of revenge for a Grey Cup defeat with a rout of Toronto.
Mitchell completed 20-of-22 passes, including a pair of touchdown strikes to Eric Rogers and another to DaVaris Daniels, as the Stampeders (2-0) won for the sixth straight time at Toronto. Rogers finished with 131 yards on five receptions in his second game back with Calgary after spending the last two injury-plagued seasons attempting to break into the NFL, while Don Jackson rushed for 123 yards.
Argonauts veteran quarterback Ricky Ray was 12-of-17 for 74 yards before being carted off the field late in the third quarter with a neck injury and taken to the hospital as a precaution. James Franklin replaced Ray and completed 8-of-13 passes for 65 yards while running 10 yards for a score in the fourth quarter for Toronto (0-2), which has lost its first two games of the season for the first time since 2002.
Rene Paredes ended the first drive of the game with a 42-yard field goal for the Stampeders, and it took them only two plays to score the next time they had the ball as Mitchell connected with Daniels for a 39-yard touchdown. Mitchell found Rogers for an 18-yard score early in the second quarter and Paredes converted an 18-yard kick in the final minute of the half for a 20-1 lead at intermission.
Calgary added to its lead in the third quarter with a four-play drive that was capped by a 10-yard scoring strike from Mitchell to Rogers, and Nick Arbuckle ran 1 yard for another TD with 5:09 left in the period for a 34-1 advantage. Terry Williams returned a punt 102 yards for a score to push the lead to 40 points and the Stampeders coasted from there for their ninth straight regular-season victory over the Argonauts.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Mitchell is 9-0 in regular-season games against the Argonauts in his career. … Toronto RB James Wilder Jr. totaled at least 80 yards of offence for the eighth consecutive game after registering 90. … Calgary WR Marken Michel, who made five catches for 67 yards in the season opener, sat out Saturday's game with an ankle injury. … Toronto DB Abdul Kanneh made six tackles in his debut with the team after spending time with Ottawa and Hamilton over the last four seasons. … Calgary LB Alex Singleton, in his third CFL season, recorded four tackles to reach 200 for his career.
