Miami (Fla.) 65, North Carolina State 60: Sheldon McClellan and Angel Rodriguez combined for 30 points, thanks in part to 15-of-17 free-throw shooting, as the host Hurricanes nipped the Wolfpack.
McClellan scored 16 points and matched Tonye Jekiri with a team-high 10 rebounds as the Hurricanes (13-5, 3-2 ACC) won for the third time in four games. Rodriguez contributed 14 points and six assists, while Omar Sherman and Davon Reed each pitched in 10 points for Miami, which finished 18-of-21 from the foul line, compared to 3-of-4 for N.C. State.
Freshman Abdul-Malik Abu, who came in averaging 4.8 points, surpassed his previous career high of 11 before any of his teammates had scored a single point and finished with 19 points for the Wolfpack (13-7, 4-3). Anthony Barber was called for an offensive foul as he tried to create space for a game-tying 3-point attempt with five seconds left as N.C. State continued to alternate wins and losses for the 12th straight game.
Miami scored 12 of the first 14 points in the second half - five by McClellan - to erase a seven-point halftime deficit and increased its advantage to 54-45 with under four minutes left. Abu scored five quick points to make it a four-point game before Ralston Turner hit a pair of 3-pointers to twice get the visitors within a point, but Rodriguez and McClellan combined to go 9-of-10 from the foul line in the final two minutes.
Abu recorded 14 first-half points on 7-of-10 shooting as N.C. State led 33-26 at the break. Abu made a jumper on each of the Wolfpack's first three possessions but was answered each time by a Hurricanes 3-pointer, and no other N.C. State player scored until Cody Martin's jumper with under nine minutes left in the period.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Neither team had a steal in the first half and the Hurricanes finished with a 3-1 edge in the category. ... Trevor Lacey and Turner, the top two scorers for N.C. State, combined for only 19 points on 7-of-25 shooting. ... Barber had six points and six assists but also committed half of his team's 10 turnovers.
