Dwight Powell had 17 points and nine rebounds and the Cardinal cruised to a much-needed conference victory over the visiting Bears.

Chasson Randle had 15 points and John Gage scored a career-high 14 for Stanford (11-7, 2-3 Pac-12), which held the Bears (10-7, 2-3) to three field goals after Justin Cobbs’ basket cut the lead to 50-46 with 9:25 remaining.

California’s top two scorers, Allen Crabbe and Cobbs, kept the Bears within striking distance with a combined 23 points in the second half after being held to four points between them in the first half.

Both teams shot less than 36 percent from the field, but Stanford was 25-of-31 (80.6 percent) from the free throw line, including 15-of-17 in the second half. The Bears were outrebounded for only the fourth time in 17 games 39-35.

David Kravish had 14 points and nine rebounds for California, which has lost four of its last six games. Bears guard Tyrone Wallace missed nine of his 11 shots and finished with six points.

GAME NOTEBOOK: California G Brandon Smith missed his sixth straight game because of a concussion. ... Stanford F Josh Huestis had nine points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. ... Bears coach Mike Montgomery relied heavily on his starters and used only eight players.
