USC 87, Coppin State 73
: Byron Wesley and J.T. Terrell scored 17 points each and Omar Oraby had 16 off the bench as the host Trojans downed the Eagles in the season opener for both teams, a contest that is part of the Maui Invitational.

Terrell, who played a season at Wake Forest before transferring to USC and sitting out last season, and Wesley were the only starters in double figures for the Trojans.

The only starter in double figures for Coppin State was freshman guard Patrick Cole, who finished with a team-high 25 points. Troy Franklin, a senior guard, contributed 23 points off the bench for the Eagles.

Wesley’s 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the first half gave him 13 points and extended USC’s lead to 10. Coppin State never got back within single digits.

Dewayne Dedmon and Aaron Fuller, two of three starters who suffered season-ending injuries for the Trojans last season, grabbed 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Oraby, a 7-2 transfer from Rice, was granted a hardship waiver by the NCAA on Thursday. … Franklin, the lone senior for Coppin State, was a three-year starter at Towson State before transferring eight games into last season. … USC point guard Jio Fontan, expected to be the top player for the Trojans after missing all of last season with a knee injury, went scoreless until scoring four points in the final eight minutes. He had a team-high seven assists.
