Indiana 63, Virginia Commonwealth 61: Will Sheehey’s jumper with 12.7 seconds left capped a late rally as the Hoosiers advanced to the Sweet 16.
Fourth-seeded Indiana (27-8) will meet Kentucky in the South Regional semifinals Friday in Atlanta. The Hoosiers handed the top-seeded Wildcats their only loss of the regular season, 73-72 on Dec. 10.
Christian Watford and Cody Zeller each scored 16 points to lead Indiana. Zeller added 13 rebounds.
Down nine points in the second half, the Hoosiers rallied to tie the game at 61 on Victor Oladipo’s three-point play with 46.5 seconds left.
VCU (29-7) missed a 3-pointer at the other end and after Oladipo’s drive was blocked, Sheehey’s left baseline jumper gave the Hoosiers a 63-61 lead.
The No. 12 seed Rams, who reached the Final Four last season, had one last chance, but Rob Brandenberg’s 3-pointer from the left wing missed at the buzzer.
Tied at 48, the Rams scored nine consecutive points to build a 57-48 advantage on Juvonte Reddic’s tip-in with 12:20 to go.
VCU made only one field goal in the next 10 minutes, but held Indiana to zero field goals for a 7:40 stretch. The Rams used Darius Theus’ jumper with 2:24 remaining to move ahead 61-56 but did not score again.
Bradford Burgess led VCU with 15 points.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Hoosiers are in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2002. Indiana reached the national championship game that season, losing to Maryland. … VCU had lost only one game since Jan. 9.
