C.J. Harris scored 18 points, Travis McKie chipped in 15 and Wake Forest held on for a 67-59 victory over instate foe Gardner-Webb on Sunday.
Ty Walker added 12 points and freshman Chase Fischer had 11 for Wake Forest (7-4), which is one win shy of matching its win total from all of last season.
The Demon Deacons have won 52 straight home games against instate, non-conference foes. This was only the second meeting with the Runnin’ Bulldogs, however.
Tashan Newsome scored 24 points for Gardner-Webb (6-7), which had its three-game winning streak snapped. The Runnin’ Bulldogs fell to 0-15 against teams from the ACC. They were trying to beat a team from a BCS conference for the first time since 2007.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs held a slim 33-30 halftime lead, but trailed the entire second half after Wake Forest pulled away with a 12-2 run.
The Demon Deacons led by as many as 11 points before Gardner-Webb made a late push. A 9-2 spurt made it 56-53 with 3:53 left, but Walker answered with a layup and Wake Forest salted it away at the free-throw line.
