Christian Watford hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer and finished with 20 points as Indiana upset visiting No. 1 Kentucky, 73-72, on Saturday.
Victor Olapido chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds for the Hoosiers (9-0), who have won their first nine games for the first time since opening the 1989-90 season 10-0.
The game winning shot started with 5.6 seconds on the clock and Verdell Jones III drove the length of the court before flipping it to an open Watford on the right wing. The junior forward got a great look and buried his fourth 3-pointer, sending the student’s section onto the court. Indiana was not in the bonus and Kentucky could have fouled without sending the Hoosiers to the free throw line on the possession.
The Hoosiers led by as many as 10 points in the second half and were still up 66-57, after Jordan Hulls hit a 3-pointer with 7:52 left. Indiana missed its next eight field goal attempts as Kentucky chipped away, cutting it to 66-65 when Michael Kidd-Gilchrist hit a layup with 4:05 on the clock.
The Wildcats took their first lead since early in the half when Darius Miller broke free for a dunk with 2:01 on the clock. The teams traded layups, leaving Kentucky with a one-point edge.
Anthony Davis missed the front end of a one-and-one and Doron Lamb split a pair of free throws, leaving the door open for Watford.
Kidd-Gilchrist led Kentucky (8-1) with 18 points and nine rebounds.
