Evan Smotrycz had 20 points and nine rebounds and Tim Hardaway Jr. added a team-high 21 points as No. 19 Michigan held off Oakland 90-80 Saturday at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit, Mich.
Michigan (7-2) never trailed but struggled to shake free of Oakland, who were tied at the half and pulled within 52-51 on Drew Valentine’s layup with 11:22 left.
But the Wolverines responded in the next two minutes with an 11-2 run, including three 3-pointers — two by Hardaway, and one by freshman Trey Burke — to extend the lead to 63-53.
Oakland wouldn’t draw closer than six the rest of the way.
Burke finished with 20 points and nine assists, and Stu Douglass came off the bench to score 13 for the Wolverines, who shot 57 percent from the field and converted 15-of-28 (53.6 percent) 3-point attempts.
Reggie Hamilton, Oakland’s senior guard, finished with a game-high 28 points on 7-of-20 shooting for the Golden Grizzlies (6-4), who lost by just a basket to Michigan State last year. Four other players finished in double figures, including Laval Lucas-Perry, who had 14 points.
Lucas-Perry played 58 games for Michigan from 2008 to 2010 before being dismissed and transferring to Oakland. The Grizzlies have now lost two in a row since having their six-game win streak snapped earlier in the week in a 84-82 loss to Ohio.
