Welcome back Robbie Hummel. After tearing his ACL twice in 2010 and missing all of last season, the Purdue preseason All-American returned on Friday night to score a game-high 21 points, leading Purdue to a 96-34 win over Northern Illinois.
After missing his first two shots, Hummel made four of his next five attempts in the first half, including three 3-pointers as Purdue raced to a 46-20 halftime lead. The Boilermakers have now won 18 straight in Mackey Arena, which equals their third longest home winning streak.
Purdue placed three others in double figures as Kelsey Barlow added 14 points, while Terone Johnson and Anthony Johnson each chipped in with 12. Purdue forced Northern Illinois (0-1) into 28 turnovers to spoil the debut of first-year head coach Mark Montgomery, who had been an assistant at Michigan State the previous 10 seasons.
NIU, which scored only one field goal the final 11 minutes of the game, had its lowest point total since December 1, 1990 when it lost at Minnesota, 65-37.
