D.J. Gay hit the game-winning shot with 4.9 seconds left to give San Diego State a 74-72 victory over host Nevada-Las Vegas in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference tournament on Friday.
Gay drove into the lane and hit a running 10-footer to put the second-seeded Aztecs (31-2) into Saturday’s final against Brigham Young.
Tre’Von Willis missed a last-second 3-point shot for third-seeded UNLV (24-8).
UNLV’s Oscar Bellfield committed a costly turnover on an errant pass to set up the sequence in which Gay hit the winner.
Kawhi Leonard led the Aztecs with 18 points and Gay scored 15.
Chace Stanback scored a game-high 22 points for the Rebels. Willis added 19 points.
UNLV battled back from a 12-point second-half deficit to tie the score at 66 on Stanback’s basket with 4:05 left.
The Rebels led 30-29 on Stanback’s 3-pointer with 5:35 left in the first half, but San Diego State closed the half with a 15-4 run to take a 44-34 halftime lead.
Thomas added 13 points and eight rebounds for San Diego State.
Both of the Aztecs’ losses this season came to BYU.
