Pushed for the second night in a row, Syracuse held off Georgia Tech 80-76 in the Legends Classic final Saturday night in Atlantic City, N.J.
The 10th-ranked Orange (5-0) led for the majority of the game, but could never pull away from the Yellow Jackets (4-2). Syracuse capitalized on a large advantage at the free-throw line, connecting on 26 of 38 attempts. Georgia Tech was 8 for 12 from the line.
Kris Joseph led a balanced Orange attack that overcame a 32-point effort from Georgia Tech's Brian Oliver. Joseph scored 19 on 5-of-7 shooting, while Scoop Jardine added 15 points and eight assists. Rick Jackson scored 10 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, Dion Walters scored 13, and C.J. Fair added 10 points for Syracuse, which shot 56 percent from the field.
Oliver finished 12 of 21 from the field, including six of 11 on 3-pointers. Iman Shumpert had 11 points and six assists for Georgia Tech.
The win was the third straight for Syracuse by five points or less. The Orange defeated Michigan 53-50 in the semifinals Friday.
