The first team to play in the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam championship game has been determined.
Old Dominion was able to hold off a late Clemson rally and secure a 61-60 victory over the Tigers in a winner’s bracket game Sunday at St. Thomas. Old Dominion will play either Seton Hall or Xavier Monday night in the championship game, with the loser of that game taking on Clemson in the consolation final.
Old Dominion (3-1) withstood a furious comeback attempt by Clemson (3-1) in the game’s final minute. It led by eight points over the Tigers, 53-45, with 4:17 to play, but Clemson whittled the deficit down until Andre Young sank a 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining that cut the Tiger deficit to 59-57.
Keyon Carter’s dunk with three seconds to go put Old Dominion back up by four at 61-57, and Young’s 3-pointer was good as time expired.
Frank Hassell and Ben Finney led Old Dominion with 13 points and Carter had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Demontez Stitt paced Clemson with 24 points. He was the only Tiger to finish in double figures. Milton Jennings came off the bench to score nine points.
