Yancy Gates had 13 points – including a go-ahead three-point play with eight seconds left – and Cincinnati ended a three-game road losing streak with a 53-51 win over St. John’s on Saturday.
Cashmere Wright (10 points) was the only other player in double figures for the Bearcats (17-3, 4-3 Big East), who picked up their first road win in over a month.
St. John's (11-7, 4-4 Big East) was clinging to a one-point lead when Gates drilled a jumper and was fouled. He then hit the free throw to make it 53-51. The Red Storm had a chance to tie, but Dwight Hardy's jumper was off and Justin Burrell missed an offensive putback with two seconds left.
Neither team led by more than four points in the second half. St. John’s, which opened the second half on a 10-4 run, took a 51-50 lead on a free throw from D. J. Kennedy with 1:57 left.
Hardy scored all 10 of his points in the second half for the Red Storm, who shot just 28 percent in the first half and trailed 28-22 after the Bearcats closed the half on a 13-1 run.
